Southampton - Liverpool Prediction, Picks and Tips

Twelve months ago, the championship fight in the English Premier League was basically decided. In the 2020/21 season a completely different picture is presented and the first ten teams are currently only separated by a meager seven points. At the end of the 17th matchday, however, the reigning champions can consolidate the table lead a little. The prerequisite for this is a win by Klopp against Liverpool on Monday evening at Southampton against Liverpool. For both teams, the past calendar year did not necessarily end as desired. The Hasenhüttl-Elf from Southampton stayed four times in a row without a win (three draws, one defeat), while Jürgen Klopp's Reds had to cope with two disappointing draws. This enabled the competition to catch up and since New Year's Day, arch-rivals Manchester United have only been ranked behind the Reds due to the poorer goal difference. Despite the two point losses, Liverpool are considered the clear favorite by the best bookmakers in the first game in 2021. The game at St. Mary’s Stadium starts on Monday at 20:00 p.m.

The former Leipzig coach had to experience “social coaching” in the last game in 2020. Due to a positive test result in his immediate environment, the Austrian went into self-isolation and was only with his team via video on Tuesday evening at the home game against West Ham. The preparation for the game went according to his wishes despite the special circumstances, but during the game he could not enjoy the unusual situation. Especially because the picture and sound were slightly delayed. For the second year in a row, no offensive football was seen on the green turf at Southampton. As with the draw against Fulham, the team had to be content with a goalless draw against West Ham. The Hasenhüttl-Elf has not won any of the last four league games and has gambled away the great starting position in the table. Almost two weeks ago the team was still in third place in the current Premier League table, meanwhile the Saints have passed through to ninth place. Despite the surprising 90-minute comeback of top scorer Danny Ings, Southampton was again unable to set any accents in the game. 25 hits in 16 league games are a very useful figure, but only one goal was celebrated in the last four league games.

At home on Anfield Road, Liverpool Football Club is very strong this season and has collected a total of 22 of the possible 24 points. The fact that the Klopp disciples are currently 13 points less on the credit side than in the previous year is due to the performance on foreign turf. The champions delivered a real gala performance in the last game before Christmas and shot Crystal Palace 7-0 out of their own stadium. The runaway victory against the Eagles was followed by the only point loss in the home stadium in the home game against newly promoted West Bromwich Albion. At the end of the year, Liverpool failed to improve their relatively weak away record and failed to score against Newcastle. Firmino, Salah & Mane by no means lacked chances, but again and again the outstanding Karl Darlow could bring the LFC offensive to despair. Despite the best opportunities, the victory was missed and with two wins, five draws and one defeat (2: 7 against Aston Villa) Liverpool are only eleventh in the guest table. Although the away record is definitely in need of improvement, the role of favorite for the guest appearance at the Saints is understandable. In the past few weeks, Liverpool have had to cope with countless high performers. Actors like Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez or Diogo Jota are still out, but the hospital is slowly but surely clearing. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is an option again and Thiago celebrated his comeback after recovering from injury at the guest appearance against Newcastle. In his almost 15-minute mission, it was easy to see how important the former Bayern player can be for the Reds. As a clock, Thiago will probably return to the regular formation against Southampton. And if the best offensive in the league (37 goals) is not so negligent with the goal opportunities, the tip on the guests is a good choice at Southampton against Liverpool.
