Maritimo - Benfica Prediction, Picks and Tips

FC Porto and Benfica Lisbon have dominated Portuguese football for almost two decades. The last other champion was Benfica’s city rival Sporting Lisbon, who took the crown in the 2001/02 season. The current defending champions are FC Porto, while Benfica Lisbon invested heavily after the runner-up to regain their supremacy. After a strong start, however, sand came into the machine in the end and at the end of the eighth game day only a complete success counts for the Europa League participant. The team has to leave the mainland and visit the flower island Madeira. The duel between Maritimo Funchal and Benfica Lisbon will kick off on Monday at 19:00 p.m. The home side have been represented in the Portuguese league upper house for several decades and are mostly found in the no man's land of the table. The quality is usually not enough for Europe, but the club doesn't have to fear relegation either.

Internationally, the team was last briefly represented in the 2018/19 season, but had to admit defeat in the Europa League play-offs Dynamo Kiev. In the last two seasons, the team finished eleventh in the Portuguese NOS league. It has been evident for several years that the team has problems, especially in the offensive game. No matter which coach is on the sidelines, there are no offensive fireworks with the Madeira team. In the last four seasons, Maritimo Funchal has scored fewer than 40 goals this season. Due to the manageable offensive efforts, the main focus is on the defensive, so many goals conceded have a rarity value. Last season, only 13 of the 34 league games ended with at least three goals. On the first day of the match, neo-coach Lito Vidigal's team suffered one more defeat at Santa Clara, but was then able to recharge their batteries with two wins. In particular, the completely surprising 3-2 win against champions FC Porto made for a lot of positive headlines on matchday three. However, this performance could not be built on, because in the last four league games Maritimo Funchal only collected one point and was therefore ranked in the table and is only two points ahead of relegation place 16.

Benfica Lisbon collected 77 points last season, making it their weakest season since 2013/14. After the resignation of Bruno Lage, the team under interim coach Nelson Verissimo was able to collect 13 points in six games, but ended up being five points behind FC Porto and thus missing out on successfully defending their title. Verissimo's short-term commitment ended at the end of the season, and in the transfer summer 2020 the red eagles managed several well-known coups. Above all, the explosive return of successful coach Jorge Jesus caused a stir. He worked for Benfica between 2009 and 2015 before moving to big rival Sporting Lisbon of all places. The club has forgiven him for this explosive move and even paid a transfer fee so that he was bought out of his current contract with Flamengo Rio de Janeiro. In 13 months he won six titles with the Brazilians and celebrated, among other things, the triumph in the Copa Libertadores, the counterpart to the UEFA Champions League. However, the Portuguese suffered the first setback early on when the Champions League participation against PAOK Saloniki was gambled away and the team is now represented in the Europa League. With eight points from four games, the knockout phase is at least within reach. In the domestic championship, the ambitions were underlined early on and the Jesus-Elf started the new season with five wins en suite. In four of the five league games, the tip on a handicap win was the right choice. In the last two games, however, the vice-champions suffered surprising defeats against Boavista Porto and Braga. In the duel with Braga, the Jesus-Elf was even 2-0 in the lead. The Red Eagles conceded three league defeats in a row for the last time in March 2001. Should this also be the case on Monday evening, odds comparison between Maritimo Funchal and Benfica Lisbon are almost in the double-digit range for the home win.
