In the Süper Lig this season an interesting championship race between the big traditional clubs from Istanbul is looming. Right in the middle of it all are the canaries, who after major investments in the summer are among the hottest title contenders this season. After a few setbacks in recent weeks, the table situation for Fenerbahce is still impressive.


At home, Fenerbahce have recently lost two home defeats in a row. After the surprising defeat against Konyaspor, a derby defeat against Besiktas followed almost two weeks ago. Fenerbahce is aiming for the championship in the Süper Lig. The traditional top club from Istanbul have not been champions since the 2013/14 season. After the big goals of the new club president Ali Koc were not achieved last season, numerous investments followed in the summer. In addition, a new trainer was introduced with Erol Bulut.

Born in Bad-Schwalbach, he was already a player for Fenerbahce for many years, but as a coach it will be the first big hurdle for the German-Turkish. Compared to his predecessors, Bulut has a very promising squad available, which is why the pressure on the 45-year-old is all the greater.

Although the handwriting of the new coach can already be seen, Bulut will still have to prove himself as Fenerbahce's coach. Last week, the third place in the table got away happily in the away win in Denizli and was only beneficiary of the poor exploitation of chances on the part of the opponent.

Fenerbahce had to defend against Denizlispor for the entire second half, even conceding a penalty after Serdar Aziz was sent off. Nevertheless, the away win was brought across the finish line, which meant that some damage limitation was pursued after the derby defeat.

After a weak start to the season, Yeni Malatyaspor was back on the road to success and made up some places in the table of the Süper Lig. In the last seven games, Hamza Hamzaoglu's team posted a record of 3-3-1, with only the away game at Besiktas being lost.

Last week, the table twelfth of the Süper Lig celebrated a surprising point win against last year's champions Basaksehir. Despite the half-time deficit in the meantime, the East Anatolian club fought their way back into the game and rewarded themselves with a well-deserved point win. Thus Malatyaspor remained unbeaten in the fifth home game of the current season.

Compared to the strong performances in the Yeni Malatya Stadium at home, the Hamzaoglu team was much more vulnerable abroad. In the away table, Malatyaspor is currently in penultimate place and is thus the second weakest away team in the Süper Lig.

In the five away games of the current season there was a record of 0-2-3 for the Hamzaoglu-Elf. On average, two goals were conceded per away game. Even if the most recent home draw against Basaksehir was praiseworthy, it remains to be seen whether the away weakness will be put aside in the difficult away hurdle against Fenerbahce.

There were no serious failures among the guests from Malatya. Hamzaoglu can therefore largely draw on unlimited resources.
