Bordeaux - Nantes Prediction, Picks and Taips

As the first of the five major competitions, the Ligue 1 will start again on Friday evening with the derby de l'Atlantique between Girondins de Bordeaux and Nantes. Which team will be the first leader of the season?

In the unfinished last season, Girondins de Bordeaux finished in a disappointing twelfth place and that cost the Portuguese trainer Paulo Sousa his job a week and a half ago in favor of Jean-Louis Gasset. Gasset already served as assistant coach at the Girondins between 2007 and 2010 and therefore already knows the club well, but that does not apply to the current group of players. Nevertheless, Gasset still seems to have the necessary confidence in his players, because so far no reinforcements have been obtained, while François Kamano, for example, already made the switch to the Russian Lokomotiv Moscow for more than five million euros. With only two victories in the last twelve league games, the previous season went out like a candle for the Girondins and there is a lot of work to be done. Under Sousa, last season was played with a three-man defense, but Gasset seems to be playing with four men in the last line as we are used to from him. For the rest, we don't seem to have to expect any big surprises in the line-up of the Girondins for the first league game of the new season, but does this also mean that we can expect another mediocre season from the Girondins?

Just like Girondins de Bordeaux, Nantes had a mediocre season with a bad end last year. Before the Ligue 1 was prematurely shut down due to the corona virus, Christian Gourcuff's team won only one of the last eight league games, so that les Canaris ended in the right-hand row for the second season in a row. Based on the lack of activity on the transfer market, Gourcuff's team does not seem to be allowed to look up too much for the time being, but that could still change in the coming months. Since the death of the Argentinian Emiliano Sala, Nantes has lacked a star player. Striker Kalifa Coulibaly scored only five times in competition last season and has thus not yet been able to make up for the lack of goal production from Sala. On average, les Canaris scored once per game last season and it is therefore not surprising that the vanguard will be Gourcuff's biggest concern. Yet it is not all doom and gloom with regard to the vanguard: in the most recent exhibition game against second division Le Havre (3-1 win), both striker Coulibaly and left winger Moses Simon showed that scoring has not yet been forgotten.
