Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen both started the new season with big defeats. In order not to immediately get into a crisis mood, a good result for both teams on Saturday would be very welcome.
 



 
 


 
 

Schalke 04 had the difficult task of opening the season with an away game against Bayern Munich. The club from Gelsenkirchen already lost 5-0 to the club from Munich this calendar year, and last Friday the final verdict was even harder. Schalke had a terrible evening at the Allianz Arena, where it served as an extra, and left the field with an 8-0 defeat. "Such a result, that should not happen to us," said a disappointed Benjamin Stambouli after the one-sided match.



But it happened to Schalke, and the bad result did not come out of the blue. In the second half of last season, Die Knappen did nothing at all. Obviously something has to be done at the club. There was also little to laugh about last weekend for the fans of Werder Bremen. The green and white started the new season in good spirits, intending to do better than last year, when play-offs were needed to avoid relegation. However, all those good intentions could not be put into action. Werder lost a home stadium with no less than 1-4 to Hertha BSC on match day. The defeat might have been somewhat flattering, but Werder was certainly not entitled to victory.



The handful of fans present in the stadium whistled the Werder players after their poor performance. "We have to make sure that we play passionately, are aggressive," said coach Florian Kohfeldt this week. 'I can understand the fans in that area,' the trainer tried to get the supporters on record. Nevertheless, Kohfeldt may also look at himself. Werder certainly does not have a hopeless selection, but has been playing considerably below par for over a year - something for which Kohfeldt is in any case partly responsible for.
