However, the real challenges for Salzburg lie in Europe. Last year, after a series of stranded attempts in the preliminary rounds, they reached the group stage for the first time. The first leg of the play-offs was scheduled for midweek. Salzburg traveled to Israel to take on Maccabi Tel Aviv. RBS certainly did not have an easy time against the home team, but managed to win (1-2). "It was a tough fight," coach Jesse Marsch reflected on the match in Tel Aviv. "We're going into the return with a lead, but we're not there yet," the American coach was wary.
