The Kralingers had a mediocre season last season and the corona stop might have been a bit better for them. It was quite the question whether Excelsior really had a real chance at play-off football. It was not possible to put down a strong series, but a year later Marinus Dijkhuizen was able to try from the first round. That first round went well and young PSV won with large numbers. After that, the weak defense proved to be still causing problems, as the Ster van Kralingen received no fewer than six goals against Almere City. The club itself scored four goals, but left too many holes. A week later, the regional rerby waited against FC Dordrecht, a team that Excelsior never really liked in recent years. Even now they fell behind thanks to a goal from - old acquaintance for Excelsior - Kevin Vermeulen. Last round, Excelsior had to play against Telstar by Andries Jonker. It went fairly evenly until after half an hour captain Luigi Bruins had to drop out injured on the side of Excelsior. After a dull first half, the teams had just left the dressing room when Joël Zwarts scored 1-0. Sven van Doorm then equalized and from that moment on, the game could go both ways. In the 95th minute Yael Liesdek scored the winning for Telstar. Excelsior once again had a changeable start to the new Kitchen Champion Division year.
