The North Macedonian national soccer team has recently been the major beneficiary of the new EM system. This stipulates that four of the 24 teams can also qualify for the European Championship via the UEFA Nations League, with one nation being played out of each of the four leagues in the play-off system. The Lavovi (in German: the lions), who initially failed in the conventional qualification as third in the group behind Poland and Austria with only four wins out of ten games, advanced as a former promoted from League D to profiteer.

At the absolute highlight, the Slovenes even reached 15th place in the FIFA world rankings in autumn 2010. The fact that it is currently almost 50 places lower, because in May 2021 there is only 63rd place on the book, underlines very clearly that things are currently not going too well for Matjaz Kek's squad.
