Real Madrid - Ath Bilbao Prediction, Picks and Tips
The second semifinal of the Spanish Supercopa is scheduled for Thursday evening in Malaga, in which Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao will cross swords. As the defending champion, Real Madrid is the big favorite to reach the final.
With a grimace on the face, Real Madrid is working towards this edition of the Supercopa. The Madrid people are still angry that last weekend's away game against Osasuna was not canceled, despite the fact that the Spanish capital in particular was ravaged by snowstorm Filomena. Conditions in Pamplona were not much better, with Los Blancos losing expensive points in the Spanish title race with a goalless draw. "This game should never have continued," Zinedine Zidane grumbled afterwards.
A pleasant winter sun is shining in Malaga in the south of Spain, so Real Madrid has finally gotten rid of the snow and the harsh temperatures. The Supercopa is the least interesting tournament of this season for the Madrid people, but it is also the shortest way to a main prize. It is therefore expected that Zidane will just start with his strongest starting eleven, including star players such as Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema. Benzema in particular is indispensable, because Real Madrid scores relatively little. In only two of the last fourteen matches in all competitions, the Madrid team managed to score more than two goals.
With a provisional twelfth place in LaLiga, Athletic Bilbao is not making much of it this season, although the future is bright in the Spanish Basque Country. This has everything to do with the arrival of the new coach Marcelino, who let the red and white play football very well on his debut. Athletic Bilbao had to give up last week with a 2-3 win against FC Barcelona, but played very strongly in the first twenty minutes in particular. Los Leones were planning to bring that form to the away game at Atletico Madrid last weekend, but that game was eventually canceled.
Athletic Bilbao has therefore had more rest than Real Madrid, but must probably miss two important defenders with Yeray Alvarez and Yuri Berchiche. Nevertheless, Marcelino will almost certainly stick to his favorite 4-4-2 system, with Raul Garcia and Inaki Williams as the attacking duo. Williams in particular is a dangerous weapon with his speed, as he has already shown against FC Barcelona.
