Israel – Scotland Picks & Prediction
Israel - Scotland Prediction, Picks and Tips
An awful lot is at stake on Wednesday evening, when Israel and Scotland face each other at the Netanya Stadium in the very last round of play in group B2 of the Nations League. The home country desperately needs the points in its fight against relegation, while the visitors have a good chance of promotion.
Too big for the napkin and too small for the tablecloth, that's the story of Israel in a nutshell. The country has some nice players with, among others, PSV attacker Eran Zahavi and Celtic midfielder Nir Bitton, but as a whole is just short of being able to compete with the European sub-top. Scotland, in particular, proved to be too great an obstacle in the semifinals of the European Championship playoffs last week, after losing after penalties in Glasgow. Also in the Nations League it does not really go smoothly, because with only five points from five group matches, the country must fear relegation to the Nations League C. That doom scenario would become reality if Israel does not win against Scotland, and Slovakia in its last group duel takes the full boot against the Czech Republic.
The fate of Israel and its national team coach is mainly in the hands of Zahavi. The striker was already five times accurate in this Nations League B, with which he only has to tolerate Erling Braut Haaland on the top scorers list. It is hoped for national coach Willy Ruttensteiner that Zahavi will have it on his hips on Wednesday evening, otherwise a dismissal would seem inevitable. The local press is already calling for his departure, and an evaluation with the Israeli Football Association is scheduled after this Nations League campaign. Only a resounding victory over Scotland could possibly keep him in the saddle.
With the 1-0 loss in and against Slovakia last weekend, Scotland saw a series of nine unbeaten international matches come to an end. With that, the British failed to secure promotion to Nations League A early, although no one at the Scots was really concerned about that. That of course had everything to do with the thrilling final in the European Championship playoffs a few days earlier, in which The Tartan Army managed to secure a ticket for next year's European Championship via penalty kicks. The result was a true folk festival, and the unofficial national anthem Yes Sir, I Can Boogie is once again firmly in the British charts.
Scotland was perhaps still tired of the many parties against Slovakia, but against Israel national coach Steve Clarke will demand a top performance again. With a win, the country promotes to the prestigious Nations League A, while with a point loss it must hope that the Czech Republic will not be able to win against Slovakia. Clarke will therefore likely call on the strongest possible starting eleven, with long striker Lyndon Dykes returning from suspension.
