Italy - Netherlands Prediction, Picks and Taips

The Venue Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo is normally the home of Atalanta, but will be the setting for the meeting in the Nations League between Italy and the Netherlands on Wednesday evening. The new national coach Frank de Boer had a start to forget quickly at 'Oranje', and therefore needs a victory quickly to silence his many critics. However, Italy has been in good shape for quite some time, and has traditionally been a very tough opponent for the Netherlands.

On a lousy field in Gdansk, Italy on a visit to Poland last weekend came no further than a goalless draw. The visitors dominated and created the best opportunities, but did not manage to get the scoreboard moving. The Southern Europeans were disappointed by the point loss, although Marco Verratti managed to put a positive spin on it: "The fact that we are dissatisfied with a draw in and against Poland shows that we have made a lot of progress and are very ambitious." Yet I could not escape the impression that national coach Roberto Mancini was already busy with a duel against the Netherlands. He made no fewer than seven changes to his starting eleven from the friendly against Moldova a few days earlier, and kept Giorgio Chiellini and Ciro Immobile on the bench, among others. However, they will undoubtedly return to the starting eleven on Wednesday evening. Either way, self-confidence is sky high right now. The Azzurri have an excellent mix of routine and talent, and have been unbeaten for eighteen consecutive games with fourteen wins and four draws.

That self-confidence is currently hard to find in the Dutch camp. The 0-1 defeat in the friendly against Mexico was forgiven for debuting national coach Frank de Boer, but after the embarrassing 0-0 draw against a B-team of Bosnia-Herzegovina, the criticism was not tender. The Orange played listlessly and hardly managed to become dangerous in Zenica. Only when Steven Berghuis made his appearance twenty minutes before time, the Netherlands started to press, but partly because of an unbelievable departure from Ryan Babel, the winning goal was not forthcoming. De Boer can actually no longer ignore Berghuis on Wednesday evening, but what the rest of the team will look like is to be seen. Including the useless exhibition game against Mexico, the Netherlands will play no fewer than three international matches in just eight days this international period, so frequent rotation is an absolute must. With the exception of the suspended Memphis Depay and the injured Matthijs de Ligt, the Orange squad played against Bosnia-Herzegovina at full strength, so it will be quite a job for De Boer to form a solid and fit starting eleven against Italy. The good news is that Depay is available again. while Donny van de Beek is the most likely candidate to replace the suspended Marten de Roon.
