Wolfsberger AC - Sturm Graz Prediction, Picks and Taips
The season in the Austrian Bundesliga is slowly coming to an end. There are still four game days to complete and currently everything indicates that Red Bull Salzburg will once again defend the title. In the fight for the Europa League ranks, however, no preliminary decision has been made. The WAC can also hope for a second international soccer year in a row.
The black and white want to collect further important points on the way there on Wednesday evening. If we believe the odds of the best bookmakers between Wolfsberg and Sturm Graz, then this undertaking does not seem particularly unlikely.
The understandable role of favorites is due in particular to the fact that the WAC recently presented itself in a very strong form in the Salzburg doubles and scored two times in a row against the leader. The guests from Graz, on the other hand, suffered their fifth defeat in the sixth match after the forced break and are currently the weakest team in the master group.
Accordingly, it makes sense to give a tip on the three of the hosts between Wolfsberg and Sturm Graz. After all, the Carinthians are the third best home team in the Bundesliga and also celebrated two victories in three attempts this season against the Styrians. But: The only home game against the fifth of the previous year was surprisingly lost 0: 1. A bad omen for Wednesday evening?
Even before the season was clear, it would be incredibly difficult for Wolfsberger AC to confirm or even top the outstanding game year 2018/19. Last year the black and whites took a sensational third place with trainer Christian Ilzer and qualified directly for the Europa League group stage. The Austrians also left a lasting impression there and collected solid six points in the death group with AS Rom, Gladbach and Basaksehir, which, however, were not enough to advance.
Nevertheless, the Carinthian fuse smelled and would like to return to the international stage in 2020/21. The WAC currently ranks fourth, which would entitle them to participate in the Europa League qualification and must be defended. The LASK as third has already rushed to five points due to the reduced point deduction, the hardest competitor is therefore Hartberg, who are fifth, three points behind the third of the previous year, waiting for slips.
Since the Hartberg team will be dealing with LASK on Wednesday, the WAC could become the big winner of the match day and take a giant step towards the Europa League qualification. Prerequisite is a home win against Sturm Graz. It would only be the second for the black-and-whites in the seventh championship round game, who, however, only drew the losers twice and shared the points three times with the respective opponent.
Two of these three draws were last drawn in the second leg against Red Bull Salzburg. The Feldhofer-Elf presented themselves in strong condition and fueled a lot of self-confidence. Now the first threesome since matchday one should be fixed. For a Wolfsberg vs. Sturm Graz forecast on the home side speaks not least the good home record. Only Rapid Vienna and RB Salzburg scored more points at home than the Carinthians, who also knew how to convince offensive with 32 goals in 14 games in their own stadium.
The loss of the regular right winger Michael Novak, who last saw his fifth yellow card at 2-2 in Salzburg, is certainly weighing heavily on Wednesday and therefore has to watch blocked. Sven Spangler and substitute goalkeeper Soldo are missing.
Since coach Feldhofer started the rotation machine at the weekend, left the two by far the best scorers Weissman and Liendl on the bench for the time being, and only substituted them in, both of them should be in top form in this seventh competitive game within 21 days. Definitely another benefit that the hosts should play into the cards.
The season so far has been disappointing for Sturm Graz. Although the club from Styria was able to qualify for the championship round as it did last year, it is currently not enough for more than the last place in the upper playoff group. Especially after the restart, the team of coach Nestor El Maestro is still not getting going.
In the six games since the beginning of June there were five defeats for the sports club. Only the guest appearance at TSV Hartberg was designed with a 2-1 victory. However, this does not change the fact that the train heading for the Europa League is about to depart. Four points are missing from the rear of the Hartberger, who should at least complete the playoff games as fifth.
If the Grazer want to attack again and at least make up one place in the classification, one or two surprises are needed on the remaining four game days. Such would be the case, for example, if the Putingamer could take something countable from the Lavanttal Arena during the week.
However, the current form is not a particularly great encouragement, because in the last 180 minutes there were six goals conceded. The two matches were lost 0: 4 away and 0: 2 at home. The uncertainty is correspondingly great and it gives the impression that the El Maestro team has more or less finished with the season. This assessment should also explain the one-sided distribution of the odds before the duel between Wolfsberg and Sturm Graz.
What should be taken into account with all the negativity, however, is the fact that the black and white won more games abroad (six) than lost (five). The goal difference is also positive. In the championship round, however, it hit nine goals in three away games. In view of this, it is difficult to believe that the WAC's strong offensive of all places is having problems with the sometimes unstable defense of the Styrians.
Trainer El Maestro has to do without two players on Wednesday due to various undisciplinaries. Both central defender Isaac Donkor and attacker Bekim Balaj saw the yellow-red card against LASK and are therefore blocked. When it comes to injuries, the 37-year-old coach, who once served as assistant coach at FC Schalke, has no significant losses to report.
